[OpenVerse] Personal OV Servers.
Hello Folks,
I wasn't ignoring all the coments related to security on the personal OV
server deal. I was just collecting them all and I will respond to them all here.
First off, I'm putting it in. The number one thing people ask me in email is
"How do I set up a server" People WANT to run a server for their friends to
connect to. Having this be a very easy process benifits all of us in the long
run with more users.
Running a server is a security risk. This is a given weather you are running a
server from the command line or running a server from the client. Since chroot
is only available on UNIX sustems, this option is out.. it wuld be a nice thing
if it was supported on all platforms but it is not. No one is perfect and I'm
included. It is unlikely that there is a hole in the software but, it may exist
nonetheless.
Because of the above, a message is printed to the user when she selects the
option to run a server. The message goes something like "Are you SURE you want
to run a server? it is not required to use this program. It is used to create a
privatre room for you and your friends to connect to" The user is given a
chance to bail out or really run the server.
Notes on the personal server:
* it uses the exact same code as the daemon version.
* it pops up a server window, which can be closed, which displays a server log
and has some control buttons. Currently, the setup server options button does
not work.
* The personal server has the option to announce it to the room you are
currently connected to.
* When the client exits, so does the server.
* closing the window does not kill the server. You can open this window again
later and close it when you're sick of looking at it.
* a new binding has been created to start a server.. it is alt-s
* a new option on the names menu is available when the server is running called
Announce Server which allows you to send private server announcements to
people.
All this and more is on the CVS.. go grab it :)
