Hey, I know that it's fun to brainstorm and invent things but why not reuse a 
whiteboard that somebody else built?

The GroupLab project (http://www.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/projects/grouplab/home.html) 
has some cool stuff, including GroupKit, a groupware development toolkit, and 
TeamRooms, a groupware environment.  AFAIK, they're both written in Tcl/Tk.  
GroupKit includes a simple white board called "SketchPad".
