One suggestion...the client should tell the server what kind of images it
supports, so that it doesn't download images it can't use (maybe just for
types other than gif, so that it doesn't break older clients completely?).
That way, you could only send a jpg or png image to a client that requests
it. I'm thinking this would be really nice with room backgrounds - newer
clients could download a jpg version of the room background, while clients
which don't support it would get the (huge, argh!) gif. I think smaller
room downloads (which you could definately get with jpeg) would make
things a lot nicer for newbies on modems.
