Automate enterprise backup with Veritas

Veritas Software, formerly Seagate Software, has released version 3.2 of Veritas NetBackup Support for Solaris 8 and the Sun StorEdge L700 tape library.

NetBackup Support allows you to ensure data integrity across multiple servers and for thousands of users on heterogenous systems -- including Max OS, Windows NT, Novell, and Unix and Unix-like machines -- with centralized management and control.

NetBackup offers multiple options for backup, which allow you to perform selective or logical restores with snapshot backups, schedule automatic copies for primary backups, dynamically share tape drives among multiple servers, or manage disaster recovery.

The administrative interface also provides choices for every user's taste. Optional application-specific backup and recovery features are available for Oracle, SAP R/3, Informix, Sybase, Microsoft SQL and Exchange Server, DB2, and Lotus Notes products.

Veritas NetBackup 3.2 pricing begins at $4,000 for Windows NT and $8,500 for Unix. Included in that price are 30 days of complimentary support, which is available via email, newsgroups, or call centers. Support pricing begins at $20 per support incident, and discounted packages and annual support contracts are available.

Early access to StarPortal now available

Sun Microsystems has announced its early access program for StarPortal. Sun's StarPortal is part of an overall plan by which Sun would like to deliver the tools, client software, middleware, and software for the datacenter of the future.

StarPortal, an ASP-like implementation of Sun's recently acquired StarOffice software, allows companies and individuals to access word processing, presentation graphics, spreadsheets, calculators, calendaring, drawing and image manipulation, and email from any Web browser.

According to a company press release, "the StarPortal software code has been frozen, and a limited number of customers/partners will be selected to receive the first early access [EA] code for StarPortal for the purpose of testing features and functionality. The EA program will then open up to additional customers/partners who will be enrolled to deploy actual pilots and perform beta testing. This program will help further develop the technology for a final StarPortal software release in spring of 2000."

Among the first early access program participants are USWest, Bell Atlantic, Debis Systemhaus Telecommunications, Homebase/Infocast Corporation, On the Go Software, Program d'Informatica Educativa, Psion Enterprise, Quantumlynx, and Telenor Nextel. The final list of participants will be announced in January 2000.

StarOffice applications are available for Solaris, Windows, Linux, and OS/2. Client access is available from any Web browser, and will eventually be available from portable devices as well.
