This is a unix issue.. on startup it checks to be sure you have the default
avatars and if you don't it copies them from the system install. At present
there is nothing that checks if you are running for the first time or if you
are an experienced user. these things happen before any initialization because
they are needed for the program to run.

With all the newbie linux users out there, it is also to be sure that if they
"cleaned" up some stuff in their home dir, the program will be able to run by
reeplacing any missing files needed to run. Unfortunatly windows, not being
multiuser designed, does not have this issue. You can delete them forever on a
windows machine.
