mySql is the obvious choice I think.  It is fast and probably the
most used database in the world as it is Open Source and free.
We run it OSRS, fairly straight forward to set up and use.

Looking for a linux product and someone who has set this stuff up before and
created tables for it and access lists. No one will have direct access to the
server , they will have indirect access through an authentication server which
I will write (in C). I will want to be making available the application server
as GPLed and since it will be using embeded sql, something popular should be
considered so others wanting to run an authentication server will have little
trouble porting it to their platform.
